The people behind the coloured squares

Quillbrookgame began as a group chat. A handful of friends started posting their daily puzzle results each morning, then started arguing about which puzzles were best, then started keeping notes. Eventually the notes became long enough that a website seemed like the natural home for them.

We are not professional game designers. We are teachers, accountants, a librarian and a retired engineer who happen to share a love of small, clever daily puzzles. What we bring is persistence: we play these games every day, for weeks at a time, and we write about what we actually experience rather than what a press release says.

Every review on this site comes from at least a fortnight of daily play by more than one editor, on both phones and computers. Scores are agreed through discussion and backed by our play logs. When a game changes, we play it again and update what we have written.

Our guide, Wren, appears throughout the site with a pencil behind one ear. Wren is the voice of our editorial desk: curious, encouraging and occasionally smug about a two-row solve. We hope Wren helps you find a puzzle that brightens your mornings as much as these six brighten ours.

01

Played before it is praised

Nothing gets a score until several of us have played it daily for at least two weeks. First impressions are recorded, but they never decide a verdict.

02

Plain words for plain puzzles

Daily puzzles are simple by design, so our writing should be too. We explain rules clearly, avoid jargon and say exactly what we liked and what annoyed us.

Corrections welcomed with thanks

Games change and we sometimes get things wrong. When a reader points out an error, we check it, fix it and are grateful for the help.
